It finally had to happen...the world cup 2006 had to come to an end and so it did. Italy won the cup against all expectations...and every team that I supported lost!... I mean not a single team won...how does something like that happen :) good thing I’m not a betting man...still it was a month of entertainment. But I think it was a bitter sweet experience in a way, although I really wanted to see who would win now that its over a lot of the great players will retire from international football. No more zizou, nedved, henry, ballack, ronaldo, beckham ....the list is endless.
The first world cup that I saw was when it was held in France in 98' when the French won with many of the same players that they had this time round in the finals...that time they were just starting their career...full of young blood this time round it was no longer the young blood but rather the experience that counted ..the playmakers no longer capable of doing what they did 8 years back...I guess sentimentally I wanted them to wrap up their careers the way they began...complete the full circle. Sadly it was not to be...
We had made plans to watch the finals at a local club - Zinc - on the big screen that they had put up such things are always better in a crowd of people I feel where the atmosphere becomes electric and the event no longer remains an event but rather become an experience...but all those plans were laid to rest when it turned out that the state was shut down by a political party because some idiots did some stupid shit in Mumbai...there were riots in the state capital n sporadic acts of violence in Pune, but that was enough for all the shops, restaurants and every form of business to shut down shop! things did look normal by early night n the game was to begin at 2330 so we did still think of going out but decided against it just in case...in the end nothing happened but the threat was enough to ruin our evening n those of I don’t know how many others...it was strange to watch these images of people from around having a ball while we sat huddled around a TV watching the biggest event of the year...hehehe well I exaggerate a lil' it wasn’t that bad we did kinda have a mini party of our own so it wasn’t all bad :) but it was a rude reminder of the fact that even though we live in a free country we really don’t have control over our lives...someone far away who sits in a position of power will be able to influence it ..for the good if they want but mostly its for the worse...
The entire month life revolved around the football n now that its over there is going to be a void in life for the next few days but at least I’ll have my life back :)
